I am a fully qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner, Herbalist and Naturopathic Practitioner based in Enfield and Barnet.
I completed my training in Naturopathic and Herbal medicine at CNM. This is the number 1 training provider for natural therapies. I also completed my Ayurvedic training at the Ayurvedic Institute, one of the most well-established and recognised Ayurvedic clinics in the UK.
I have been practising natural medicine for over 10 years, first mostly using herbal medicine and naturopathic principals and the past 5 years mainly using Ayurvedic principles and herbs. I found during my work with patients that instead of fighting disease the best way to heal was to restore balance to the patient by working on the mind and body. Anything can upset this balance including injuries, climate and seasonal conditions, birth defects, genetics, age or emotions but by bringing balance, the body’s own healing power can work to restore and maintain health.
Ayurveda is a 5000 year old system of medicine which originated in India and recognises the mind-body-spirit connection. It is a holistic system of medicine and means science or knowledge of life.
It is more than just a system of treating illness but works to achieve an optimum state of health and well being and is therefore one of the most sophisticated and powerful systems of healing.
Ayurveda aims at getting to the cause of disease instead of masking symptoms with medications.
Ayurveda is a combination of three components, Vata (ether and space) Pitta (fire and water) Kapha (water and earth). These combine to make the unique qualities of a person, similar to a person's DNA, every person is unique. When these doshas are out of balance they contribute to the disease process. The three doshas are the primary factors for the production of a disease, the goal of treatment is to bring the mind and body into balance.
Vata: Powerful and active of all the doshas it controls basic bodily functions such as cell division, mind, breathing, blood flow, heart function, waste -transportation and elimination through the intestines and enzyme assimilation.
Pitta: Pitta governs the heat in the body this includes digestion and all other activities in the body. It aides in the secretions from the stomach, bile from the liver and inflammation, it helps normal sight and memory functions and maintains bodily transformation.
Kapha: Responsible for the formation and maintenance of bodily tissues including muscles, bones and connective tissue. It governs stability and endurance and gives emotional strength. It's the glue that holds everything together. It provides strength and immunity to the body and mind and contributes to comprehensive health in a state of balance.
Allergies
Addressing root causes, strengthening the immune system and balancing the doshas. It usually occurs when the immune system becomes hyper sensitive to foreign substances, these can be pollen, chemicals, certain foods, dust, animals etc. When treating allergies we need to address the root cause, there are a number of factors that need addressing. The digestion or 'agni' (digestive strength) when this becomes weak, food is not broken down properly and 'Ama' (toxicity) forms in the body blocking many channels and lowering immunity. Stress levels are also another factor, when stress is high immunity is low. Stress also effects sleep and hormonal imbalances which can cause system disregulation.
Asthma
Airflow to the lungs is obstructed by edema and congestion in the respiratory tract. This causes narrowing of the pathways resulting in a person's inability to exhale. They have symptoms including non-productive cough, tight chest, shortness of breathe and difficulty filling the lungs and expectorating mucus. It is exacerbated by allergies, irritants, diet etc. According to Ayurveda the kapha has become elevated and this can cause excess mucus production and difficulty breathing. To treat asthma we need to address the digestion and balance the doshas with particular attention to kapha dosha.
Arthritis
The most common complaints when it comes to arthritis is pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. This can be anywhere in the body, hands, ankles, wrists, shoulders, knees etc. In Ayurveda there are 2 main types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In both cases treatment focuses on strengthening the agni, removing ama and balancing the doshas.
Autoimmune conditions
Autoimmune conditions occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissue. This results in chronic inflammation, tissue damage and systemic health complications. Examples of these can be thyroiditis, hashimoto's, psoriasis/hidradenitis suppurativa, type1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis, crohn's and lupus. In Ayurveda these disorders are due to imbalances in vata, pitta and kapha doshas. It starts with weakened agni, accumulated ama in the channels which weaken the immunity (ojas) and the body's ability to recognise its own cells. This causes the disturbance in immunity. The treatment is to strengthen agni, detoxify the system, balance vata, pitta and kapha and strengthen the immunity.
Digestive complaints
According to Ayurveda the causes of all diseases lie in the imbalance of the gut fire (agni). Maintaining a healthy digestion is the key to good health and happiness. Proper digestion is necessary for the assimilation of food so as to maintain and protect the body's health. When the gut fire is imbalanced indigestion and incomplete break down of food can occur resulting in the accumulation of ama which block channels throughout the body that result in weakened tissue. Common systems include bloating, acid reflux, abdominal discomfort etc. this overtime can lead to fatigue, weakness, reduced energy, and lowered immunity which makes the body more susceptible to disease. Some of the conditions which can result are, constipation/diarrhoea, inflammatory bowl disease/cancer, gastritis/crohn's, ulcerative colitis, celiac/IBS and chronic allergies. Treatment involves balancing the digestive system, ensuring the body's proper nourishment and maintenance which prompts overall health and long life.
Diabetes
In Ayurveda diabetes is primarily a kapha disorder but can involve all three doshas. The imbalance in these doshas effect the digestive system and disrupts the body's ability to metabolize sugar effectively. Vata type diabetes is caused by an imbalance in vata dosha, this type of diabetes is associated with the depletion of body tissue, weight loss and frequent urination, they may also experience weakness, fatigue and dry skin. Pitta type diabetes is an imbalance in pitta dosha associated with excessive thirst, sweating and frequent infections, increased hunger and inflammation are common symptoms. Kapha type diabetes is caused by imbalance in kapha dosha, it is the most common type of diabetes. It is associated with obesity, sluggishness and insulin resistance. Kapha type often struggle with weight gain, lethargy and slow metabolism, type 2 diabetes. Diet is the main componant to treat alongside the digestion, balance agni and help detoxify the system.
Infertility
Fertility is influenced by four essential components for conception, Rutul (timing) Ambu (nourishment) Beej (seed) Kshetra (field) hormonal balance, nutritional status, sperm and egg quality. Ayurvedic treatment focus is on balancing hormones, rejuvenation (ojas) and balancing agni.
Menopausal symptoms
Menopause is a natural occurring biological process that occurs in a woman's body. It marks the end of her menstrual cycle and fertility, it is associated with the decline of hormone production oestrogen and progesterone by the overies. In Ayurveda menopause is veiwed as a natural and transformative stage of life, at this time vata dominance can produce symptoms such as dryness of the skin and hair, joint pain, insomnia, stress and anxiety. Pitta imbalances can cause hot flushes, irritation etc. According to Ayurveda it is a natural transition rather than a medical condition, treatment include balancing the doshas and herbs to balance the hormones.
Painful and heavy periods
Ayurveda attributes menstrual pain to excess vata which governs movement and flow, treatment will focus on balancing the vata dosha. There are other doshas that can become vitiated, pitta resides in the blood and in excess it can cause heavy bleeding. Kapha can also become vitiated and cause stagnation and blockages, this can cause water retention, bloating and tissue overgrowth. So treatment depends on symptoms.
Skin conditions
Skin conditions can range from minor to more severe and chronic ailments. They are due to an imbalance of all 3 doshas, food is not being digested properly and is creating ama which is circulating and accumulating in bodily tissues. Treatment focus on balancing agni, light detoxification and balancing the doshas, also topical remedies to help alleviate pain and reduce the inflammation.
Stress and anxiety
The Ayurvedic approach to psychological disorders is to emphasis the interconnectedness of mind body and spirit. The aim is to address root causes and restore harmony.
Weight issues
Although kapha is not the only factor at play in your struggle to address weight issues, it plays a major part, so reducing kapha and balancing the digestion is the Ayurvedic approach.
